keyboard software media

This page lists my collection and general info about music cartridges and other original software media for electronic musical instruments. Not listed here are media those were neither sold separately nor interchangeable among multiple instrument models, nor later standardized media like diskettes or CD-ROMs. Most info about copies I don't own was compiled by myself by reading ads and eBay. Also many thanks to Tim's great website www.crublenet.co.uk for his own list, which helped me to fill some gaps.

Important: Do not ask me where to buy new software for your keyboard. Most of these media have not been made anymore for decades, and I also don't know where to find them. Try eBay, but even there they are rarely offered separately, but usually come only together with a used keyboard.

Casio barcode music

Casio barcode score sheets (officially named "Bar-Coded Music", or "MS memory"?) were a technology to scan digital music data from special barcode songbooks into the internal sequencer memory of a keyboard using a barcode pen. The use of that pen needed training and worked poorly under bad lighting conditions. Also the quality of this music was bad, because it consisted only of a monophonic main voice with optional simple standard accompaniment. Despite the songs contained neither rhythm nor instrumentation data and you had to scan up to 2 full pages of barcode rows for some of them, most melodies were disappointingly short. Casio barcode score sheets were introduced with the Casio MT-70 and VL-5 (the latter even without any accompaniment) and fortunately soon abandoned in favour for the by magnitudes better ROM-Pack technology. This shortlived barcode format was only supported by Casio VL-5, MT-70, Casiotone 501 (CT-501) and Casiotone 701 (CT-701).

In the ancient home computer magazine "Your Spectrum" (Issue 4, June 1984) was an article about connecting a Sinclair ZX Spectrum home computer with the barcode reader input of a Casio VL-5. This article contains a BASIC program and many technical details about the data format of the Casio barcode songbooks, and it says that the same program works also with the Casio MT-70. The article can be found here.

The Casio barcode data format is described in the US patents 4422361 (general) and 4437378 (with key lighting). According to US patent 4464966 Casio also planned barcode programmable rhythm, which AFAIK was never released.

barcode score sheets from Casio MT-70

This stack of separate barcode sheets came with the lesson book that ws shipped with my Casio MT-70. The barcode sheets itself have neither release date nor copyright marks but only page numbers, and the corresponding human readable musical score is in the lesson book. A bit bizarre is that most songs are marked "traditional" or "folk song" despite at least some of them are not that old. Possibly Casio attempted to circumvent to pay royalties to their genuine composers. The melody voice of these songs works also with my Casio VL-5, but the chord voice shows only an error.

These are the 14 songs sorted by page number:

  1. Symphony No.9 in D minor, "Choral" (by L. v. Beethoven)
  2. From the New World (by A. Dvorãk)
  3. Jingle Bells
  4. When the Saints Go Marchin' In (American folk song)
  5. Russian folk song
  6. Sonata (by W. A. Mozart)
  7. 500 Miles (American folk song)
  8. Tom Dooley (American folk song)
  9. Aura Lee (English Air)
  10. "Red River Valley" (Traditional)
  11. American folk song
  12. The House of the Rising Sun (American folk song)
  13. Jamaican Farewell (Jamaican traditional)
  14. [2nd page]
  15. Cielito Lindo (Mexican traditional)
  16. [2nd page]

"Bar Code Score Book" from Casio VL-5

This barcode songbook came with my 2nd Casio VL-5. Unlike the Casio MT-70 barcode sheets, it is not a stack of loose pages and the barcode tracks include no chord voice (which is not supported by the VL-5) and thus consist only of a monophonic main voice. The songs come with human readable score and marks for the intended manual settings for preset sound, preset rhythm, sustain, tempo and balance.
  1. Romance De L'Amour (Old Spanish Song)
  2. Cielito Lindo (Traditional)
  3. Sonata (by W. A. Mozart)
  4. Red River Valley (Traditional)
  5. From the New World (by A. Dvorãk)
  6. K A T I-O W A (Russian Air) [name written in cyrillic letters]
  7. Santa Lucia (Italian Folk Song)
  8. Jingle Bells (Traditional)
  9. When the Saints Go Marchin' In (American Folk Song)
  10. The House of the Rising Sun (Traditional)
Type number: "022A SA" (followed by 5 kanji characters), Printed in Japan.

Commercially available barcode songbooks were sold as a 2 book set (indicated by printed price tag, initially 9.95$ with notice "Higher outside U.S.A."); one contains the songs as barcodes, the other as human readable musical score (labelled "Easy Play Speed Music™", including a version in simplified notation). They were also available separately (US price tag initially 4.95$). All of them were copyright by Sight & Sound International Inc. On the outside of english language barcode songbooks stands Casiotone Bar Coded Music Publication. While all these books include a chord track (that is not for VL-5), only few had the notice "for VL-5 and all other models", which hints that not all barcode songs are compatible with it. (This may be a ram capacity issue.) Unlike those shipped with the keyboards, the barcode songs in the books have proper individual copyright notices. Nowadays all of them are extremely rare, because they obviously sold poorly (or were discarded later) by primitive tone quality and awkward use.

Mine came shrinkwrapped and included a loose score sheet MCA-015-H "For All Bb Instruments" (8 pages) with regular sized notes of the songs, including "Dixie Land" (missing in the score book). Another loose page "Casiotone 701, Easy Instructions - Program and Play" (MCA-BCI) says that the score sheet is intended for practise to simultaneously accompany the barcode song on a Bb wind instrument (trumpet, clarinet, soprano sax or tenor sax). And fortunately it particularly came with a colour printed advert (PCA-BCI) listing all at that time existing or planned barcode music sets and boasting about that "unique bonus" wind instrument score sheet that likely never got included again.

This German language barcode songbook has no price tags. (Once I saw it on eBay with a Casiotone 701.) Instead of "Casiotone Bar Coded Music Publication" it has the poorly translated notice "Balken Code Melodien für Casiotone". (p), © 1982 Sight & Sound International Inc. The music score book has in the simplified notation additional light blue notes for monophonic accompaniment. My specimen is in poor condition, full of water damage and fungus stains.

The following 24 Casio barcode songbooks were mentioned in the advertisement sheet "Casio Music Book Club" (PCA-MBC) of 1982 that came e.g. with my MCA-005-B. The suffix "-C" possibly only indicates the increased retail price printed on the books or stands for a set (barcode + music score book). I have added numbers of corresponding music score books from the "Introducing Speed Music Plus" advert. Because not all songs were listed, I included those from book photos of the (likely older) advert "Introducing the revolutionary new language of music" (PCA-BCI) that came with my MCA-V01-B.

The likely older advert "Introducing the revolutionary new language of music" (PCA-BCI) additionally lists as "Soon To Be Released" the following barcode songbooks. It is unknown if these ever went into production, when it proudly promised "for the exciting CT-701 and all future Casiotone bar code instruments..." - but there were none.

These barcode songbooks were likely released with slightly different name (see above).

  • "Kenny Rogers"
  • "Inspirational"
  • "John Denver"
  • "Willie Nelson"
  • "Country Pops"
  • "Country Hits"
  • "Christmas"
  • "Love Songs"
But these could not be identified:

Casio ROM-Packs

ROM-Packs are cartridges those contain digital music data similar to MIDI files stored on a ROM IC. They were used by older Casio keyboards; most of them had a "melody guide" key lighting feature. ROM-Pack musics were usually nicely arranged and old ones often came with a musical score book, that also properly lists the original composers and release years of the songs. The musics consist of a main voice, a 2nd voice (called obligato) and a couple of rhythms with standard accompaniments including breaks and fill-ins. The ROM-Pack format was introduced first with the Casio MT-800 keyboard, and all ROM-Packs were apparently published by Sight & Sound International Inc. The cartridges employs the same conductive carbonized silicone rubber connector that is used in many LCD wrist watch displays. Also a user programmable "RAM-Pack" version of these cartridges came out (Casio RA-1), but the only instrument that could use them was the Casio PT-50.

The ROM-Pack data format is described in the US patent 4624171 and (later) 33607. For pinout and hardware info also see here.

  12. Ciribiribin

  14. Brazil (Aquarela Do Brasil)
  15. Adios
This cartridge has a "not for sale" notice and was shipped with the first Casio ROM-Pack keyboards like Casio MT-800 and PT-50. It is quite strange that these old instruments were shipped with a 15 song cartridge, while later Casio keyboards came with ROM-Packs with each only 4 songs, despite the price of ROM capacity certainly didn't increase over the years. In the manual of this cartridge mentions that it was released in 1983 by Sight & Sound International Inc. and advertises several other ROM-Packs with also each at least 14 songs. Unlike my other ROM-Packs, the RO-201 has a shiny sheet metal bottom instead of the usual black plastic one.

According to Tim's website, in Japan the MT-800 and PT-50 were instead shipped with RO-101 and RO-102.

RO-251: "How To Play Your Casio ROM Keyboard" (instructional ROM)

This one contains multiple differently complex tracks and variants of the same melodies for play training. Unfortunately the song names are not printed on the cartridge and I am missing the score book. In a prospect was the following list: This is what I heard on the cartridge itself (I am not sure about some of the song names and thus took them from above):
  1. Beautiful Brown Eyes
  2. accompaniment training for 3
  3. Marianne
  4. arpeggio training for 5
  5. Skaters Waltz
  6. Du, Du, Liegst Mir Im Herzen (plays a bit wrong?)
  7. Chopsticks (piano tune)
  8. intro training for 9
  9. When the Saints Go Marchin' In (complex version with plenty of obligato stuff and fill-ins)
  10. My Wild Irish Rose

This cartridge was sold separately, (p) 1988 Sight & Sound International Inc. Most of the arrangements have a wonderful trashy "small church organ" appeal that reminds to christmas fair orchestrion music or (depending on the keyboard) an old home organ in an American wedding chapel. This is not the overused flat ironed pop xmas muzak stuffs you hear everywhere as elevator music. Not all songs use rhythm, and even the others don't play rhythm all the time constantly but rather drum like a Salvation Army's band than average slimy "easy listening" CDs.

RO-551: "World Songs"

  1. Unterlanders Heimweh [wrong, real title "Yama No Ongakuka"]
  2. Greensleeves
  3. Die Lorelei
  4. Old Folks At Home
All these musics have a great and complex orchestrated arrangement. This cartridge has a "not for sale" notice and was shipped with later small  ROM-Pack keyboards including Casio PT-80, MT-18, PT-82 and PT-87.

Interesting is that the name "Unterlanders Heimweh" is obviously wrong; it seems to the Japanese "Yama No Ongakuka", which is not a German folk song, despite this melody was also the "German folk song" demo of VL-Tone 1 and various Casio pocket calculators (e.g. my ML-90). A badly detuned short clip of the melody was even used in the "rating" sound effects of the Casio PT-82 "melody guide" play teaching feature, and later the melody appeared as one of many songs in various "song bank" keyboards.

Blatantly based on the RO-551 version was the title theme and background music of the Atari VCS2600 lightgun game prototype "Shooting Arcade" (©1989 Axlon / Atari). While the demo tune of my Casio MT-36 in its manual is also named "Unterlanders Heimweh", this tune is a rural folk waltz that strongly differs from the VL-1 melody. Also the Elite MC2200 has among its many demos one labelled "UMTERLANDERS AEIMWEH" (regard the typo), and Letron MC-38 includes it too (misspelled "UMTERLANDERS HEIMWEH); both melodies correspond to the MT-36 demo and not VL-1. The MT-36 melody is definitely the genuine documented "Unterländers Heimweh" (means something like "Lowlander's Homesickness", regard the 'ä'), alternatively known as "Drunten im Unterland" (means "Down in the Lowlands", ©1835 by Gottfried Weigle, seen on YouTube with German lyrics).

Later I had bought a Citizen - Melody Alarm clock with 8 polyphonic tunes including the RO-551 melody, which in its blurred manual photo was listed as "Musician of the Mountain", which appeared to be a translated title of the Japanese children song "Yama No Ongakuka" (Mountain Musicians). After hours of websearch in different languages I thought that the original German title of this folk song was "Ich bin ein Musikante", which is a traditional children's game song about a musician, involving vocal imitation and miming of the many instruments he plays. But the melody clearly differs; also in YouTube "Unterlanders Heimweh" examples with RO-551 melody I found no other hints of origin than Casio and nothing with German lyrics. Another such song is "I Am a Fine Musician", which has yet another different melody. But finally a youtuber identified that it had indeed German origins; in a children's song book "Kinder-Gärtlein" of 1841 there was the folk song "Das Lied vom Musikanten" (The Song of the Musician) which had indeed an almost identical melody like the VL-1 demo, but with additional middle part and a few different finishing notes, and also lyrics about vocal imitation of musical instruments. It exists in an older songbook of 1838, and among centuries melody and lyrics apparently mutated into many variants. (The full story see here.) The earliest related melody was likely Mozart's Allegro in F (KV. 1c) from Nannerl's Music Book (1759-64), but they all somewhat differ.

So it has to be concluded that the "original" of the RO-551 melody is the Japanese children song "Yama No Ongakuka" (about forest animals playing different instruments on a mountain), which was based on the barely known German folk song "Das Lied vom Musikanten" and accidentally was misnamed by Casio as "Unterlanders Heimweh" (without 'ä' umlaut) until it got known worldwide under this wrong name. Generally Casio in their early products (e.g. barcode songbooks) applied the term "folk song" or "traditional" quite sloppily - possibly as an excuse when they didn't know the author or even to avoid paying royalties. Thus their "German folk song" indications must be taken in doubt.

This was a dedicated special ROM-Pack that originally came with the MIDI saxophone Casio DH-800 Digital Horn (seen on eBay, I don't own one). Unique is that additionally to 4 songs it contains 16 preset rhythms. Also normal ROM-Pack keyboards can play these (keyboard main voice always defaults to "trumpet" (or its equivalent) preset sound but then you can select others). In most keyboards (e.g. PT-82) you can start accompaniment, but the accompaniment stops after each bar, so you have to quickly re-press them; rhythms with fill-in stop accompaniment before each fill-in. Only in the ancient MT-85 (MT-800 hardware) all normal rhythms end after only 6 bars and those with automatic fill-in after the 3rd repeat of the fill-in, but already in PT-50 they run ok (behave like PT-82). In CT-840 you can only use fingered chord accompaniment (because chord and ROM-Pack mode is a combined slide switch) and the fill-in button (doesn't affect automatic fill-ins) doesn't work. But in MT-88 you can even make accompaniment run perfectly (continuously) by selecting the "chord guide" mode.

RO-581: ?

  1. The Dog Policeman
  2. Goat Letters
  3. Doraemon's Song
  4. Jingle Bells
  5. Dragonfly's Glasses
  6. My Way
This Japanese cartridge (text in Kanji, JASRAC number "T-370807") likely was originally shipped with Casio PT-280. I bought mine from the same eBay vendor like my PT-280, and also Tim writes that he saw it on a Yahoo Japan auction with this keyboard. All songs beside 4 and 6 are Japanese children's songs; English titles mentioned by Tim are loose translations. The intro of song 1 is known from the arcade videogame Frogger.

The following cartridges are mentioned in an advertisement in the manual of the ROM-Pack RO-201 that came in 1983 with my Casio MT-800. The ad mentions also a "Casio International Music Club" where people could subscribe for mail ordering info about new Casio music products and software (including new ROM-Packs). Note that these old ROM-Packs contained 14 to 18 songs each, while later ones had way fewer. Unfortunately the ROM-Pack number is not mentioned there (where present, I saw them on eBay).

Tim reports on his website that the advertised song 14 "Call Me" does not exist on his cartridge; also the song list of an eBay article didn't mention it, so possibly it was omitted by Casio by lack of ROM space or copyright issue. Such a version on eBay had this track list:

Yamaha PlayCards

PlayCards are musical score cards made of cardboard with printed musical score on its front and a magnetic data tape strip at its lower rim that contains digital music data similar to MIDI files. They were used by Yamaha's early key lighting keyboards, and each card contained (usually) one song. The PlayCard System was introduced first in 1982 with the Yamaha PC-100. Despite the technically simpler media, the capabilities and complexity of PlayCard musics was very similar like its competitor Casio ROM-Pack. The tempo and arpeggio volume of PlayCard musics had to be set manually through analogue sliders, therefore the intended slider setting was printed on the cards. Because Yamaha unfortunately removed the arpeggio feature from their later PlayCard keyboards, the arpeggio volume mark was omitted on later PlayCards. According to the PC-100 manual, also double sided PlayCards for longer songs exist (both sides had to be scanned before start), however according to Tim's website none have been found (only some with 2 separate songs on both sides).

Beside home keyboards also some home organs (Yamaha Electone CN-1000 and MR-1) supported PlayCards. Yamaha even released for MSX computers the PlayCard reader CR-01, that was connected through a small stereo plug with the cartridge Playcard Program UPA-01. On a standard MSX sound chip it played only the 3 main channels, but on computers with Yamaha FM synth unit (like Yamaha CX5M) it could render them perfectly with chords. A karaoke-like self-contained PlayCard player was the Sanyo DP10 (basically a PC-100 without keys).

Each PlayCard has an identification number below the tape strip. Some cards were re-released with different numbers (small changes turned the lowest digit from 0 into 1).

The Yamaha PlayCard system concept is split among a variety of US patents, including 4413545, 5144875, 4466324, 4454797, 4387620, 4587878, 4406203 (details see here). Interesting is that the note data was compressed to save space.

PlayCard set from Yamaha PC-100:

This PlayCard set came with my Yamaha PC-100. The white cardboard envelope has the type number "8202" and the cards show arpeggio setting.

PlayCard set from Yamaha PC-1000:

This PlayCard set apparently came with my newer Yamaha PC-1000. The cyan cardboard envelope has the type number "8305" and the cards show arpeggio setting. Bizarre is that although the songs correspond to PC-100, all ID numbers are increased by 1 and some print details changed (i.e. typos were replaced with eh other typos?).

  • My other PC-1000 apparently had another white cardboard envelope "8201" with the older card set like PC-100. This set also came with Yamaha PC-50 (seen on eBay).

PlayCard set from Yamaha PCS-30 (Evergreens):

Apparently the Yamaha PCS-30 was originally shipped with only 6 PlayCards those mention no arpeggio setting. I wondered why I had 2 incomplete basic sets with almost the same doublets, so I concluded from eBay that it came with only these 6 cards from the PCS-500 set. It was released in a blue cardboard envelope (told by Tim and seen on eBay), and another variant on eBay was mentioned as "Evergreens", which apparently came in a plastic bag with front sheet picture like the optional sets. Tim claims that the PCS-30 initially came with the same 12 card set like PCS-500.

17-610: PlayCard set from Yamaha PCS-500:

This PlayCard set from 1984 came with my Yamaha PCS-500. Its cardbox envelope has the type number "17-610(1)"; the cards mention no arpeggio setting.

17-610: PlayCard set from Yamaha PCR-800:

This set is the same like with my PCS-500, except that the envelope type number is "17-610(4)".

    additional card sets:

Additional PlayCards were sold in packages of 6. Every package came in a transparent plastic bag with paper front sheet. The individual cards had each a transparent plastic envelope and were stuffed together into an additional red printed paper bag. The card print design often differs between sets, which helps to sort them. The front sheet of later sets had a set number ("PLAYCARD ##") while older sets had only a name, thus I included the small number next to the "printed in Japan" label as their ID. Also my PCS-30 manual mentions them, so they seem to be the offical set ID.

These are the complete sets I have.

"Dance Of The Hours" strongly differs from that internal demo of Yamaha PCS-30 (more rhythm with drum solo) and Casio MT-800 (lacks the interlude). "Minuet" and "On The Beautiful Blue Danube" cards mention the strange hint "* Watch the blinking lump of "SYNCHRO START" and follow it when you start singing." despite they include no lyrics. Yamaha MusicCartridges

The Music Cartridge was the Yamaha counterpart of Casio's ROM-Pack. But unlike the latter, it was only used a short time from 1995 to 1997(?) in medium and higher grade home keyboards (Yamaha PSR-230, PSR-320, PSR-330, PSR-420, PSR-520, PSR-530, PSR-620 and its oriental version PSR-A3); these all had General Midi with velocity sensitive fullsize keys, nice sound quality and menu adjustable parameters - none of them were toy-like. The only models with key lighting (LED row) were PSR-230 (I own one) and PSR-420. A hacker told me that the internal data format of the nicely arranged music is based on General Midi, and likely identical with music files for Yamaha diskette drive keyboards, those were introduced at that time (PSR-620 had both) and soon replaced them. Also "style" cartridges with only accompaniments (no songs) were made. Normally each cartridge contains exactly 6 items (songs or styles), only the "Bonus" cartridges (shipped with a keyboard) contain more, and the "Let's Play Keyboard" series even had at least up to 24 songs, which shows that it was all determined by marketing and not a technical limitation. Like with DOS, items on cartridges have 8 character file names (shown on LCD, can contain small letters despite most are capital-only). The first cartridge series apparently came in all different label colours while laters were always violet (these are rarer - like because they already competed with diskette keyboards and thus sold poorly). The physical cartridge size roughly resembles those of Sega Megadrive.

Unless mentioned otherwise, I do not own original package and booklet that came with these.

    5. Ragtime
This cartridge ©1996 has a pink label (indicating contents "SONG", "STYLE", "REGIST", JASRAC number T-620004) and apparently was shipped with Yamaha PSR-230. Likely another variant (on PSR-230 box photo seen on eBay) had the same label design without JASRAC number.

    "Bonus" (PSR-320, PSR-A3)

      Songs
    1. YESTERDY = Yesterday (The Beatles)
    2. A-TRAIN = Take The A Train (Duke Ellington)

This cartridge (©1995 Yamaha Corporation, with blue label indicating contents "SONG", "STYLE", "REGIST", no JASRAC number) was shipped with Yamaha PSR-320 and PSR-A3 (contents names identified by PSR-A3 box photo seen on eBay). It may be the same like with PSR-620.

    "Bonus" (PSR-330)

      Songs
    1. St_Life = Street Life
    2. JamesBnd = James Bond theme

This cartridge (©1997 Yamaha Corporation, with blue label indicating contents "SONG", JASRAC number "T-9730078") was apparently shipped with Yamaha PSR-330 (claimed on eBay).

The Bonus cartridges from other keyboards had different copyright date and label colour; their contents likely differs.

    "Bonus" (PSR-530)

      Songs
    1. 530XG [fusion, synth rock, samba with steel drums - all with applause]
    2. Always [piano]

    10. China [chinese march]
This cartridge (©1997 Yamaha Corporation, with brown label indicating contents "SONG") was shipped with Yamaha PSR-530. This is the only known cartridge with "XG" logo and notice "for PSR-530 only". Despite it does run on my PSR-230 and sounds quite well, by lack of a PSR-530 I can not estimate whether certain preset sounds (e.g. drumkits) or synth effects are wrong or absent; likely XG stands for an extended sound set that the other keyboards don't have.

The Bonus cartridges from other keyboards had different copyright date and label colour; their contents likely differs.

The following Music Cartridges are listed in booklets of my originally packaged German carts:

The following additional Music Cartridge series is shown in an advertisement on the back of my booklets "The Beatles - Greatest Hits 2" and "Genesis - Greatest Hits" of 1995. They depict only tiny thumbnail photos without external text, so additional info was added from eBay, e-mails or websites. From the rest I tried hard to extract song names from the grainy photos (may be wrong). Likely all these cartridges had a violet label.
